Thirteen Years Later – I Photographed Their Story Again

Some moments in photography feel less like work and more like being quietly allowed to witness a life unfolding. This family photography Bali session at Villa Belantara by BaliSuperHost was exactly that for me.

Thirteen years ago, I photographed Risa and Jake on their wedding day. I still remember how everything felt so full of beginning. Two people standing side by side, stepping into a new life together, with so much hope in their eyes. At that time, I did not think too far ahead. I just knew I was grateful to be there, holding those moments as they happened.

Then life moved on, as it always does.

Thirteen years passed before I heard from them again. When the message came in asking for a family session, I honestly sat still for a moment. It felt unreal in the most beautiful way. The same couple, returning after more than a decade, but this time with a different kind of story to tell.

They now have a son and a daughter. A perfect little family of four.

When I met them again at Villa Belantara, a quiet and green sanctuary managed by BaliSuperHost, something in me softened immediately. The place itself felt calm and open, but what made it truly special was seeing how their family filled it with warmth.

Risa and Jake looked familiar, but also different in a way only time can create. There is a deeper calm in them now. A kind of understanding that only comes after years of building a life together. And then there are their children, full of energy and light, running around them, pulling them back into the present moment again and again.

Watching them together felt emotional in a quiet way. Not overwhelming, but steady and real. I kept thinking about how love changes shape over time. How it starts as something between two people, and then slowly grows into a home, into laughter in different corners of a room, into small hands reaching for parents without thinking.

There were moments during the session where Risa would look at Jake, and then at their children, and just smile without saying anything. Those small pauses said everything. It felt like life had come full circle in front of my camera.

Thirteen years ago, I photographed their wedding.

Now I photographed their family, their son and daughter, their life as it is today.

And in between those two moments, there is so much I did not see, but could somehow feel. Years of growing, learning, struggling, and loving each other through all of it.

This is what family photography means to me. It is not only about a beautiful location like Villa Belantara. It is about being trusted with someone’s story again after time has passed. It is about seeing how far people have come, and realizing that time is both fast and kind in ways we do not always notice.

I wish Risa and Jake and their beautiful children nothing but happiness, health, and continued love in the years ahead. I truly hope our paths will cross again in the future, and I will once again have the chance to quietly document another chapter of their story.
