Andy and his lovely family enjoyed a beautiful sunset family photoshoot at Petitenget Beach in the Seminyak area of Bali. The session was filled with playful moments, warm hugs, sandy feet, and genuine laughter while the children enjoyed their time near the ocean.
Petitenget Beach is known for its wide coastline, soft sand, and beautiful sunset views facing the Indian Ocean. During the late afternoon, the beach glows with warm golden light and beautiful reflections on the wet sand. These conditions create a perfect atmosphere for family photography.
Beach sunset photography in Bali can produce dramatic and beautiful results. The golden hour light feels softer and warmer compared to daytime sessions. However, sunset sessions also create more difficult lighting conditions than morning photoshoots or indoor villa sessions.
When photographing directly toward the sunset, the sky often becomes much brighter than the people in the frame. Without additional lighting, faces can appear too dark while the sunset remains properly exposed. This is why I recommend using a lighting assistant during beach sunset sessions.
A lighting assistant helps hold additional lighting equipment to balance the strong backlight from the sunset. This creates more natural skin tones, clearer facial details, and better-balanced photographs while still preserving the sunset atmosphere. The assistant becomes especially helpful during the final minutes before sunset when natural light changes very quickly.
Of course, using a lighting assistant is always optional. Some families prefer natural silhouette photographs, while others prefer brighter and more evenly lit portraits. Every session can be adjusted based on personal preference and photography style.

For sessions inside villas, hotels, or beaches that do not directly face the sunset, a lighting assistant is usually unnecessary. Softer natural light in shaded areas or during morning sessions already creates beautiful conditions for relaxed family portraits.
During Andy’s session, the sunset light, ocean reflections, and playful energy from the children created many beautiful moments naturally. Instead of forcing poses, the session focused on allowing the family to enjoy their time together while capturing genuine interactions along the beach.
Andy also kindly shared this lovely review after the session:
“Iwan is an amazing photographer. From liaison to getting us down on the date, making me and my young family feel comfortable, his service was impeccable from the start to the end. It really wasn’t easy to deal with a 3 year old and a 6 year old who really just wanted to play in the sand, but he was experienced and patient enough to bring out the best in my kids. And of course, the photos were therefore amazing. Thank you Iwan for such an unforgettable experience!”
Thank you again to Andy and family for trusting me to capture these beautiful memories during your Bali holiday. I wish your family happiness, wonderful adventures, and always good health in the years ahead.
